Mineral‍‌‍‍‌ Processing and Flotation Conditioning Mixing Tank

SJB Series

This type of mixing tank is usually placed at the front of the flow of flotation unit. It is not complicated in function but it is a very important one. The slurry and reagents must be mixed well so that a pulp of uniform concentration goes to the flotation machine. If flotation unit does not have the conditioning stage that is stable, the recovery of the mineral in question gets lower.

The operators can not believe a single gauge. They watch the surface movement, put a hand on the railing to sense the vibrations and look for the solids sinking right at the feed getting thick or the grade being up. These small things at the floor usually indicate the mixing quality better than a nameplate.

In fact the SJB tanks carry a load of these responsibilities every day. Impeller is agitating the slurry continuously. Particles, water and reagents are being retained and mixed in a well-controlled fashion. The final particle size, i.e. grinding, density, retention of the pulp in the vessel and the remaining available space in the plant have been considered as main factors for defining the dimensions of the mixer.

Functioning Description

The drive motor rotates the impeller and shaft. Material at bottom goes upwards. Pulp from the top comes downwards within the mixing zone and joins the rest of the material at the bottom. The flow pattern is such that settlement is minimized and pulp gets close to what flotation needs.

The most effective way to test is a first look at start time. Look closely at any change at the bearings, movement on the surface and dead spots at the corners, etc. Faulty coupling, fractured blade or density fluctuation may alter the flow in the tank. Early detection will save hours' work in a few days later.

Site Conditions Equipment Selection

Ores which appear to be quite similar can often exhibit completely different behaviors. For example, very small grind or very high density of the slurry, a big chunk of abrasive minerals are factors that significantly influence how fluid material behaves in the tank. The best design solution for these changes would be an adaptation from a successful project on a similar site.

Before finalizing the product model we require some basic data such as ore kind, its distribution, pulp concentration, anticipated production level, residence time of the liquid in the reactor, floor space available, etc.

The sole criterion of tank capacity is generally not sufficient to select the right equipment. The other process parameters, such as those, play a decisive role.

Slurry mixing issues with their causes and how the problems can be detected?

If the chemical is mixed, but only at the place of the feed, or, when solids form a heap in the corner of the tank and when the changes in the density are much bigger than allowed by the flotation cell, the recovery downstream is likely to be affected.

The main inspection points involve an impeller, bearings on the shaft and how the pulp is circulating. When there is a high amount of abrasive material in the minerals, one must carry out these inspections more often, since the wear is going to come faster. It will do no one a favor to ignore it.

Main Advantages

Stable slurry circulation
The impeller keeps solids suspended and maintains a consistent mixing pattern under normal plant conditions.

Flexible model selection
Effective volumes from 0.6 m³ to nearly 50 m³ cover most flotation conditioning duties. Final choice still has to match the plant layout and actual slurry behaviour.

Wide application range
Used on copper, lead-zinc, gold and iron ores as well as several non-metallic minerals. The same basic design adapts to different pulp densities and particle sizes.

Applications

The primary use is pulp conditioning ahead of flotation cells. Enough residence time and even reagent distribution are what most flotation circuits need from this stage.

Similar solid-liquid mixing duties appear in some chemical and building-materials processes. Suitability always depends on the specific material properties and process requirements.

Purchase and Technical Review

Quote starts with the numbers the plant already has. Slurry volume per hour, ore type, particle size, percent solids, reagents, space or height limits. That is enough to match the tank to the real duty instead of guessing from volume.

If the duty looks different from past jobs we just talk it through. Standard model works most times. Sometimes a small change on the impeller or motor is all it needs.

Maintenance and Service

After a few months running it pays to open the tank and look at the impeller, shaft, motor bearings and the inside walls. A simple log of what you find makes ordering spare parts later much less of a scramble.

How often you inspect depends mainly on how abrasive the slurry is and how continuous the duty cycle is.

Project Reference

A lead-zinc plant in Yunnan used SJB mixing tanks for conditioning before flotation. The focus on site was steady circulation and even reagent distribution under the local ore conditions.

Every project has its own ore characteristics and process design. Results from one installation should be treated as reference only, not as a guarantee for another site.

FAQ

What is the purpose of an agitation tank?

It mixes slurry and reagents before flotation so the pulp enters the flotation cells in a stable, well-conditioned state.

How is the model selected?

Selection is based on slurry volume, material characteristics, required mixing time and the space available in the plant.

Can it be used for different minerals?

Yes. The SJB series has been applied to various metallic and non-metallic ores. Final suitability still depends on the specific pulp conditions.

For industrial buyers, the safest approach is to review the actual operating data, maintenance expectations and production targets together with the supplier before confirming the final configuration. A short technical discussion at this stage usually prevents mismatches later.
