Filtration‍‌‍‍‌ through Filter Press at Solid-liquid interface

The filter press series SHS for the mining and mineral sectors

The SHS Series Filter Press finds a home in mineral processing plants as well as facilities where industrial slurries have been made a slurry by mixing solid or other components in them for treatment. Materials separated using this press commonly include minerals, tailings, by-products of hydrometallurgy, wastewater and other substances slurred in water, i.e. which can be moved by pipelines in pumped form.

In a real site scenario, the introduction of a High-Frequency Dewatering Screen as a solution may begin by looking at the sludge characteristics rather than the sole reference to the machine size. On a daily basis, plant engineers and operators decide between running either vacuum drum filter and a thickener based on factors such as how much liquid, concentration of solids, particle properties, a final drying method available and the space needed to set up such a unit before the purchase stage. Although the table of specifications shows the filter area as main sizing parameter only cake drying or cycling time cannot be obtained only from this factor.

Description of SHS Filter Press Functioning

During running and when starting up the equipment, the two main parameters to monitor are feed pressure, the nature of filtrate and whether the chamber has been filled. A transparent filtrate following the main filtration stage will generally be taken as an indication that filter cloth and sealing conditions of the unit have been suitable to the slurry being processed. On the case of getting muddy filtrate, it is most likely that one has to find out if there is the problem with cloth material, plate sealing, or even the characteristics of slurry.

Filling being finished it is the turn of the selected system to proceed with such further operations as membrane squeeze or blowing with air. Upon opening the platess, the filter cake is discharged and then it is prepared for the next processing phase. The complete cycle is determined by factors relating to the product and the way the plant has been worked.

Industry Challenges We Help Solve

High Cake Moisture: Stable pressure filtration improves solid-liquid separation and helps reduce drying and transport costs.

Low Processing Efficiency: Efficient slurry filtration helps prevent dewatering from becoming a bottleneck in continuous production.

Unstable Filtration: Proper filter cloth and operating settings improve filtrate clarity and stable cake formation.

High Operating Costs: Easy operation, maintenance and cake discharge help reduce downtime and labor costs.

How to Select the Correct Model

Before selecting a machine, the technical team normally reviews several operating factors. The required filter area is related to slurry volume and filtration cycle requirements. The plate arrangement, cloth material and discharge method are selected according to the characteristics of the processed material.

For a first review, please prepare information including slurry type, daily processing amount, solids concentration, required cake moisture, temperature, chemical condition and available space around the equipment.

Filtration Performance Depends on Site Conditions

A high frequency dewatering screen does not operate in isolation from the upstream process. Fine tailings, concentrate slurry and chemical residues can behave differently even when they are processed by the same equipment model.

For example, a slurry with high fine-particle content may require different cloth selection and filling conditions compared with a coarse mineral concentrate. During a filtration test, engineers normally review filling time, filtrate clarity, cake thickness and cake release behaviour before confirming the final arrangement.

Daily Operation and Maintenance Points

During routine inspection, operators usually check plate movement, hydraulic pressure, cloth condition and filtrate discharge. A damaged cloth, incorrect installation or unsuitable slurry condition may influence filtration results.

Spare filter cloth selection should be linked with the approved drawing and part information. Similar dimensions do not always mean identical filtration behaviour because cloth material and permeability can affect operation.

Configuration Options

The SHS Series can be arranged with different options according to process requirements. Chamber plates are commonly used for standard filtration duties. Membrane plates may be considered when an additional squeezing stage is required for the process target.

Plate shifting systems, cloth washing devices, vibration equipment and cake conveyors should be selected according to plant layout, labour arrangement and discharge requirements.

Production and Engineering Services

Our company Sanland started its operation in Shenyang, China, in 1988. We specialize in the design and production of crushing, screening, sorting, and conveying of bulk materials.

The factory locations in Shenyang and Kaiyuan together are a total of 95000 M2 large space, the number of our staff is more than 350 people.

From casting through machining to welding, assembly and testing, the entire process is internally handled. This enables quality control at each production stage.

In the span of more than 3 decades, we’ve shipped 110+ crushing plants all over the world, with their output range of 100 – 3,000 t/h.

Along with the provision of equipment, we give our plant to customers for custom-made, equipment renovation, technical assistance, construction works, testing, and support from the site.

The machines are used by the clients on mining, excavations and aggregates projects in more than 60 countries, including Chile, Peru, Australia, Saudi Arabia, Russia and Southeast Asia. Among the clients are such world-famous companies as BHP, Vale, CODELCO, Anglo American, ANSTEEL, Philex Mining, China Gold, and Huaxin Cement.

What’s also important for a company such as us is that we will be doing our best to ensure high-quality customer service and support for the mining plants located in Canada. To that end, we have established our local field service center, which covers about 3000 square meters at Ontario, Canada. Local engineers and spare parts have been put in place through partnerships with locals. Such matters as commissioning of plants, commissioning and operation training, repair and maintenance, supply of Spare parts and even the customer service following the sale could be covered through the center.

In addition, we take care not to use our machines and services in a manner or location that is detrimental to the environment, and we have made a commitment to the continuous improvement of our environmental and health and safety performance. Sanland is therefore, a manufacturer whose products not only conform to world-class standards but also the company has implemented the ISO certification for the environment and OSH management systems (ISO 14001 and ISO 45001).

Moreover, the company’s recognition of the mining and aggregates industry in a big way is also a result of the fact that the product development efforts through invention patent awards, a rating of the highest level for business credit ("AAA Enterprise Credit Certification") and a few other certifications have earned an appreciation as being one of the leaders who supply first-rate and quality, stable products in these ‍‌‍‍‌sectors.

Application Examples

The SHS Series Filter Press is applied in mineral concentrate dewatering, mine tailings treatment, hydrometallurgical residue filtration and industrial sludge processing.

Project Reference: Gold Tailings Filtration in Peru

At a gold tailings site in Peru, the filter press was installed as part of a dry-stacking circuit and connected with the return-water system. Commissioning activities focused on filling time, pressure rise and cake release conditions.

The operating result was related to the tested tailings properties and the complete process arrangement. Different projects may require different cloth selections, plate configurations or cycle settings.
